Overview

Legacy CMS modernized on AWS in four months

The customer's CoreMedia CMS ran on an end-of-life version 10 architecture with outdated Java environments and undocumented dependencies from prior integrations. The vendor no longer provided support. Performance issues and instability were the result. A simple lift-and-shift was off the table due to the entangled architecture and the risk of data loss.

About the Customer

A globally recognized manufacturer in professional media technology with over 1,000 employees. The company's products have been used on award-winning productions for over a century, connecting creativity and future technologies across the entertainment industry worldwide.

Challenge

Legacy Infrastructure with No Safety Net

The CMS powered over 5,000 content pages serving marketing, CRM integration, and recruiting. The infrastructure had accumulated years of technical debt: outdated database versions, unsupported Java environments, and legacy code that previous integrations had introduced as undocumented black boxes. These dependencies caused instability and performance degradation.

The main pain points were outdated databases and application versions. There was no manufacturer support left, which resulted in visible performance issues and instability. A simple lift-and-shift to a new environment was not an option because the application architecture was too complex, and the risk of data loss was simply too high.

Solution

Controlled Replatforming on AWS

The customer chose Tallence AG for their track record in complex cloud transitions and their method-driven approach to risk mitigation. Tallence proposed a Replatform strategy (one of the AWS 7 Rs), replacing the legacy stack with a modern, cloud-optimized environment.

Modernizing the Core

Tallence upgraded CoreMedia from version 10 to 12. The backend moved to Java 17 and Spring Boot 3.3. On the frontend, the team rewrote the rendering logic from Vue 2 to Vue 3 and replaced the legacy ActionScript-based editor interface with TypeScript.

Application Modernisation

Infrastructure on AWS

The team rightsized the CMS hosting on modern Amazon EC2 instances optimized for the Java 17 workload. The data layer was migrated to current versions of Amazon RDS, offloading patching and backups to AWS managed services.

AWS Technologies

De-Risking with Automation

With 5,000 pages at stake, manual testing was not viable. Tallence built a custom automated testing tool using Selenium that crawled the legacy live site and the new AWS-hosted staging environment in parallel, performing pixel-perfect visual comparisons. The tool caught subtle rendering bugs and content discrepancies that manual review would have missed.

Test Automation

Seamless Cutover

The team used AWS Backup to secure recovery points and implemented an application-level freeze during the final cutover. This provided rollback capability at every stage of the transition.

Results

Speed, Savings, and Stability

The project completed on September 24, 2024, meeting the four-month deadline with zero unforeseen incidents.

Thanks to the great work of our development team, we were able to smoothly integrate all links into the new system. We implemented the project on time and within budget.
